press release: Beautifully illustrated in full colour, this book provides an accessible introduction to the collections of European decorative household textiles held in the National Museums of Scotland. The spectacular Scottish wall hangings and accompanying valances which date from 1719 are featured, as well as items like the historically important and unusual Icelandic hangings, rare examples of Greek embroideries and pieces of exquisite crewelwork that date from the early 1600's to the 1720's. Issues surrounding the policies and context of the founding of the collections are also addressed, and their growth and development to the present day examined. |
