  Between 1959 and 1969 a reclusive British couple, Reginald and Mary Toms, filled their 1720s chateau near Lake Geneva with English, French, Flemish and Italian tapestries. They left few records explaining why they preferred scenes from mythology, the Bible, ancient history and farm life. After Mr. Toms’s death in 1978, his wife let the hangings molder; a caretaker occasionally dusted at the chateau and opened windows. The Fondation Toms Pauli in Lausanne, Switzerland, which took over the collection in the 1990s, has devoted a decade to restoring it and assembled seven Swiss, French, British and Belgian scholars to co-author THE TOMS COLLECTION: TAPESTRIES OF THE SIXTEENTH TO NINETEENTH CENTURIES (Fondation Toms Pauli/Verlag Niggli, $120). Individual stitches are visible in the crystalline photos of 139 textiles, and the text ponders mysteries about the tapestries’ subjects.   Danièle Denise écrit sur cet ouvrage: Il faut saluer l’arrivée en librairie de la publication d’une collection de broderies religieuses de très haut niveau. Josiane Cougard-Fruman et Daniel Fruman l’ont commencée il y a une trentaine d’années et nous racontent leurs quêtes et leurs enquêtes dans une introduction très vivante, loin du classicisme habituel. On les suit dans leurs traques, leurs espoirs, leurs déceptions et leurs découvertes, lot habituel de tous les chercheurs ; mais l’on sent qu’ils n’ont jamais perdu ni la foi, ni le goût de ces recherches patientes et passionnées et que le fruit de tous ces travaux est double. Les cent quatre-vingt-cinq pièces de cette collection, ornements liturgiques ou tableaux de dévotion, couvrent une période de cinq siècles et certaines d’entre elles sont d’origine royale. Alternativement belles, somptueuses, chargées d’Histoire ou simplement charmantes, elles ont toutes quelque chose à nous raconter. Grâce à l’action conjuguée des pouvoirs publics, convaincus de l’intérêt de cette collection, et grâce surtout au généreux mécénat de M. Romain Zaleski, cette collection va bientôt pouvoir être montrée au public dans un des hauts lieux de la spiritualité en France, le trésor du cloître de la cathédrale du Puy-en-Velay. Par ailleurs, à l’ardeur de la recherche et de la collecte des pièces sur le terrain, Josiane et Daniel Fruman ont joint le besoin intellectuel d’une connaissance plus approfondie. A la fin de leur ouvrage, ils nous apportent une documentation nourrie, fruit d’une compétence qui n’a fait que croître et s’aiguiser au fil du temps.   Presse Bericht (press release): Die Frage nach dem Herstellungsprozess beginnt mit den Stickern selbst, von den stickenden Königinnen und Hofdamen über die Stickmeister in den Werkstätten, Mönche und Nonnen bis zu professionellen Stickerinnen.   Cotton was already traveling around the world from producer to consumer in colonial times; all that has changed today is the routes it follows. Thus in one common scenario, cotton fibers from Texas are sent to China to be processed, then wend their way to the fashion runways of Paris, and finally travel as old clothes to Africa, where they are worn as secondhand fashion.
  Hans Peter Jost has created a photographic portrait of cotton on his trips to India, China, Brazil, America, Uzbekistan, Mali, and Tanzania, documenting the lives and working conditions of cotton farmers and the cultivation, harvesting, processing, and marketing of cotton.
  Christina Kleineidam, who accompanied the photographer on his travels, describes what they saw and offers background information on the specific problems of the individual countries.
  The economist Pietra Rivoli explains the global realities of the cultivation and marketing of cotton in her foreword.
