  The German Textile Museum is located at the Andreasmarkt in Krefeld-Linn. The market is the secular centre of the small mediaeval town around the castle. One side of the square belongs to the textile museum. Half of the building is of a modern construction, while the other half betrays its past as an imposing residence of a mayor of Linn from the 18th century. In an appropriate setting one of the greatest museum treasures of the town of Krefeld is accommodated here: almost 30.000 textiles from all over the world, produced over a period of more than 2.000 years.
The museum collection was based on the former collection of patterns started as long ago as 1880 for the Royal Prussian School of Weaving. In the 1930s ownership of the collection, which had grown considerably in the meantime, was transferred to the town of Krefeld. A good number of the treasures contained in the collection stem from the production of velvet and silk, which has made Krefeld a city since the 18th century and the inhabitants of the town connoisseurs of these luxury items.

In order to preserve the highly sensitive materials and their colours for as long as possible the textiles are stored in a carefully air-conditioned archive. For this reason the museum does not have a display collection which is accessible to visitors. Changing exhibitions of the items stored by the museum and other museums provide an insight into the variety of the textiles and the comprehensive Krefeld collection. Between the exhibitions the museum remains closed. In addition, visitors have a library with adjacent reading room permanently at their disposal. Please contact us to inquire about the theme of the relevant exhibition! Regular guided tours take place every Wednesday and Sunday at 3 pm. Other guided tours and guided tours for children are available by appointment.
   

Schwermut und Schönheit
Trauerkleider aus dem Museum of World Funeral Culture, Novosibirsk

Diese ungewöhnliche Ausstellung ist möglich geworden durch die Zusammenarbeit und mit Unterstützung des Kuratoriums Deutsche Bestattungskultur e.V. Düsseldorf. Gezeigt werden Trauerkleider, die nach Vorbildern aus ganz Europa für das neu gegründete Museum of World Funeral Culture in Novosibirsk angefertigt wurden.
Dass die Kostüme nach bestimmten Vorbildern, sei es aus Sammlungen, sei es nach Gemälden und Graphiken, lediglich nachgeschneidert sind, tut dem Glanz und der üppigen Pracht dieser Gewänder keinen Abbruch. Wertvolle Originale, wenn es sie denn noch gäbe, könnten nicht verantwortungsvoll auf eine so grosse Reise geschickt werden.

Aber auch so machen die Kleider die Vielschichtigkeit des Themas deutlich. Während einerseits die schwarze Farbe der Kostüme die Trauer und den Schmerz des Verlustes beim Tode eines geliebten Menschen verdeutlichen, weist die Kombination von Schwarz, mit Rot, Violett oder Weiss, die sogenannte Halbtrauer, auf einen bereits verstrichenen grösseren Zeitraum seit dem traurigen Ereignis hin und deutet die sanfte Rückbesinnung auf die Welt der nicht mehr Trauernden an.
   Dieser stillen Schwermut stehen andererseits der laute Prunk, die geradezu auffällige Eleganz und Schönheit mancher Trauergewänder gegenüber, die die Trägerin nicht selten in geradezu unverfrorener Weise herausputzen und - beim Tode eines Gatten etwa - bereits deutlich auf die neuerliche Verfügbarkeit der schönen Witwe für den Heiratsmarkt hinzuweisen scheinen.

Die vielen Facetten, die mit den Trauerkleidern verbunden sind, die eigene Schwermut, der Zwang der Gesellschaft, die vielen Probleme beim Verlust eines Menschen und damit oft genug die Veränderung der gesamten bisherigen Lebensumstände, aber auch der notwendige Blick nach vorn, das alles wurde in einer interessanten Publikation von Frau Dr. Natascha Hoefer zusammengefasst, die unter dem Titel "Schwermut und Schönheit - Als die Menschen Trauer trugen" im Auftrag des Kuratoriums Deutsche Bestattungskultur erschienen ist. Von dieser Publikation her leitet sich auch der Titel der Krefelder Ausstellung ab. Laufzeit der Ausstellung ist bis zum 22. August 2010.
