The 6th Riga International Textile and Fibre Art Triennial Tradition & Innovation: Identity. Organized by the Latvian National Museum of Art and the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design this  exhibition will be held in Riga Exhibition Hall ARSENA¯LS. There is no limitation of techniques or materials. Each artist may submit only one recent work (2016–2017); not displayed in large international shows before.The maximum dimension of the artwork should not exceed 3m x 3m x 3m in display.     The Budapest Museum of Applied Arts houses one of the most important collections of Ottoman Turkish carpets in the world. It is planning a large-scale international exhibition covering the characteristic types of 15th–18th century Ottoman Turkish carpets.   • 4 February to 1 January 2018 Lace in Fashion - Fashion Museum. Assembly Rooms - Bennett Street - Bath BA1 2QH UK - The Exhibition Curator, Elly Summers, has been working painstakingly to catalogue the museum’s extensive collection of lace dating from the 1500s to the present day, supported by a grant from the Arts Council England and assisted by expert volunteers from the Lace Guild. The oldest object in the exhibition will be a smock dating from 1580-1600 with Flemish bobbin lace on the sleeves and collar, which is one of the earliest pieces in the Fashion Museum’s collection.

    Kurfürstliche Gewänder der Rüstkammer aus der Zeit um 1550 bis 1650 führen in Originalen die grandiose Fürstenmode der Renaissance und des Frühbarocks vor, wie sie bis auf wenige Ausnahmen sonst nur noch in Bildnissen der großen Herrscher jener Ära zu belegen ist. Mit der Neueröffnung der Kurfürstlichen Garderobe im Dresdner Residenzschloss 2017 werden sie nach mehr als 75 Jahren endlich wieder in einer Dauerausstellung gezeigt.     Die Entstehung von Kaufhäusern in Wien war Teil einer gesamteuropäischen Entwicklung des 19. Jahrhunderts. Dass viele der Gründer aus jüdischen Familien stammten, ist heute genauso wenig bekannt wie die einstige Existenz des Textilviertels im ersten Wiener Gemeindebezirk. Prominente Unternehmen wie Gerngross, Zwieback, Jacob Rothberger, Braun & Co, Goldman & Salatsch, Jungmann & Neffe oder Knize und deren Gründerfamilien werden durch die Ausstellung ebenso in das Gedächtnis der Stadt zurückgeholt wie die sogenannten „Vorstadtkaufhäuser“ Wodiczka und Dichter. Eindrucksvolle Objekte erzählen nicht nur die Geschichten der Familien, sondern auch von Architektur und Inszenierung, den Designern, der Klientel sowie Verkäufern, Schneidern und Schaufensterdekorateuren.

    Die diesjährige Sonderausstellung der Abegg-Stiftung widmet sich der Konservierung und Restaurierung historischer Textilien. Zu sehen sind einzigartige Kunstwerke aus Zentralasien und China: Schuhe, Gewänder, Behänge – alle über tausend Jahre alt. Sie wurden in der Abegg-Stiftung erforscht und restauriert. Doch was heisst das genau? Was macht eine Textilrestauratorin? Oft ist es regelrechte Detektivarbeit, die sie zu leisten hat. Die Ausstellung stellt die Untersuchungs- und Behandlungsmethoden vor und zeigt, welche Erkenntnisse zu Herstellung, Funktion und Geschichte der textilen Kunstwerke daraus gewonnen werden können. Sie lässt die Besucher teilhaben an intimen und überraschenden Einblicken, die sich sonst nur dem Restaurator eröffnen.
    Die Textilkonservierung und -restaurierung gehört zu den wichtigsten Aufgaben, die Werner und Margaret Abegg ihrer Stiftung zugedacht haben. So werden in der Abegg-Stiftung seit 50 Jahren historische Textilien für die Zukunft bewahrt – mit viel Erfahrung und kontinuierlich weiterentwickelten Methoden.

    Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg herrscht in der Schweiz ein grosser Mangel an Arbeitskräften. Findige Unternehmer beginnen, ihren Bedarf mit eigenen Anwerbeaktionen in Italien zu decken. So auch das Liestaler Textilunternehmen Hanro. Es lässt Prospekte – «Forse nella Hanro?» – drucken und in Italien verteilen. Gesucht werden junge, alleinstehende Frauen im Alter von 18 bis 32 Jahren. Die Bemühungen tragen Früchte. Schon Mitte der fünfziger Jahre stammt ein Drittel aller Näherinnen aus Italien.

    Insgesamt blieb Gunta Stölzl (1897 – 1983) 12 Jahre am Bauhaus, als Studentin, als Gesellin, als Werkmeisterin und schließlich ab 1926 in Dessau als Leiterin der Weberei. 1931 verließ sie das Bauhaus Richtung Schweiz und produzierte als selbstständige Handweberin Stoffe für die Industrie sowie textile Objekte für den individuellen Bedarf. Die Ausstellung zeigt einen Überblick über das gesamte Lebenswerk Gunta Stölzls: Frühe Zeichnungen, Web-Entwürfe und Wandbehänge, dazu Gebrauchstextilien, Möbelstoffe, Vorhangstoffe und Wandbespannungen bis hin zu Krawatten- und Kleiderstoffen.

  • 20 October to 5 March 2017. Karl IV. Prag – Nürnberg (catalogue). Emperor Charles IV is one of the most important and multi-faceted rulers in Bohemian and German history. To mark his 700th birthday, the Free State of Bavarian and the Czech Republic are holding a joint exhibition. The exhibition will explore the life and rule of Charles IV in the context of the chequered events of the 14th century.
