Deutsch-Afghanische Initiative (D.A.I. e.V.)
ist ein eingetragener Verein, der 2002 von einer
kleinen Gruppe von Deutschen und Afghanen aus
Freiburg gegründet wurde. Im Rahmen dieses
Vereins betreut Pascale GOLDENBERG
seit 2004 das Stickprojekt in Laghmani (nördlich
von Kabul) und seit 2011 das Hazara-Stickprojekt
bei Herat (Westafghanistan). Die Frauen sticken
mit der Hand Unikate, die vom Verein und durch
Pascale Goldenberg in Europa verkauft werden;
dadurch tragen die Stickerinnen konkret zur
Verbesserung der finanziellen Lage der Familie
bei. Im Zusammenhang mit diesen Stickereien
wurden schon zwei europäische Wettbewerbe
durchgefuhrt, bei denen die Europaer die
Stickereien als Keimling ihrer
künstlerischen Arbeit betrachteten und
einbezogen: « Fäden verbinden
Frauen » (2007-2008) und
« Afghanistan-Inspiration »
(2010-2012). - Goldenberg-freiburg@t-online.de - www.deutsch-afghanische-initiative.de

- April
2 to 7, 2013, A TSA STUDY TOUR : Textiles
of the Lowcountry: Charleston and Savannah, Collecting, Preserving, and
Narrating.
Join TSA on a unique study
tour of the Lowcountry, a 200-mile
stretch of coastal South Carolina and Georgia between
Charleston and Savannah, a region shaped by cotton
production. The tour revisits myths of
the Southern Lady and her delicate needlework
juxtaposed to the unskilled slaves crude
products. From chintz appliqué quilts to
seagrass baskets, we will learn about the fine
handwork of southern women preserved in
Lowcountry museums and private collections.
Tour leader Jessica Smith, an
artist/designer living and working in Savannah
and a professor at the Savannah College of Art
and Design, has arranged special textile-focused
visits to historic sites to be augmented by
conversations with specially invited researchers,
curators and artists. Studio visits and a
panel discussion at the Savannah College of Art
and Design Museum of Art will wrap up our tour on
the last night.

- Closure of
sampler Museum at Celle, Germany: one
may reed the following statement in the blog
"needleprint" by Jacqueline Holdsworth:
"... book your tickets to Celle and see the
fabulous sampler museum there before the
doors close finally on 1 March 2013. This is
an unspeakably sad occasion. Lorraine Mootz who
has been Docent with the museum for a number of
years tells me: Until Thursday before Christmas,
there were plans that the Sampler Museum (along
with two other smaller Celle museums) would be
relocated in another large historic building on
the outskirts of Celle's Old Town.
Unfortunately in a last-minute change due
to the necessity of large budget cuts, the
financing of the project was suprisingly rejected
by the Celle city council. That was done
during a 5-hour meeting on December 20st. The
reduced number of visitors to the museum played a
part in their decision. In the two years during
which the Bomann Museum has run the Sampler
Museum, there has been little activity on the
public relations front. Some people even thought
the museum was closed which it most certainly was
not. In case you know of anyone who wants to make
a quick last-minute visit to the Sampler Museum,
it is open normally in January and February, that
is, the museum is closed on Mondays and Fridays
but open the other five days of the week from
10am until 5pm. It is closed for a short lunch
break from 1-1:30.
I am informed that Mrs Conneman no longer
has a say in what happens to the collection
- it is down to the city council. No-one
knows at present what exactly will happen to the
collection. Given the very difficult
financial times, there is no blame or anger to be
expressed - but concerned, helpful, positive
emails can be sent to The Mayor of Celle - oberbuergermeister@celle.de and the local newspaper in
Celle - redaktion@cellesche-zeitung.de It would be very helpful
if you could contribute an email. Wonders and
miracles do happen! "

- Textilmuseum
St.Gallen, Switzerland: from January
2012 there will be a new funding body. The museum
will be managed by a new association
called: "Verein Textilmuseum".
It will be financed partly by the Canton of
St.Gallen, the city of St.Gallen and the chamber
of commerce (IHK). Collections, the library as
well as the house itself will remain property of
the chamber of commerce, all 3 of them will be
lent without charges to the newly founded
association. With this solution collaborators in
the house may keep their jobs, the library is
also continuing to be a lending library.
Hanspeter Schmid will retire in the end of 2011. From
February 1st 2012 the new director will
be: Dr. Manuela Reichel from
Vienna.
